Keeping Focused

February 1, 2012
Everything around us in this 2012 season of Time, is working hard to pull us away from our focuses.  What is your focus?  What do you want to accomplish this year, this month or even this day?  Are you overloading on social media, the news and what is going on in 'other' people's lives?  In order to reach and attain your goals...it will be necessary to eliminate some distractions that take up your valuable time.  Ask yourself today, "What is pulling me away from my dreams, my goals - my accomplishments?"  Take a moment to reflect on what your time robbers are and focus on what it is you wish to accomplish and go for it!

Take Time to Relax

January 22, 2012
"Hurry!"  "Rush!"  "Deadlines!"  "Faster! Faster! Faster!!!"

Take a deep breath, take a step back...assess the situation.  The job will get done much quicker if you release the stress that's trying to make you crazy.  There's only one of you and it's important to take care of YOU!  Sometimes that brief moment of composure and rethinking a situation will make all the difference in finishing the job in a more productive manner.  Plus, you will be healthier because 'stress' could not overtake you.  Something to think about...

Success Starts on the Inside

January 15, 2012
Some people think success is when you 'arrive' so to speak and get that promotion, movie, book contract, graduation day, etc.  In some respects, that is true...yet I believe success happens in our everyday life while working toward attaining our goals.  For example; a student is successful everytime he/she passes a test or completes an assignment.  A writer is successful everytime he/she 'sits down to work' and cranks out one more page.  When seeking a promotion in any job - one is successful each time one fills out a new application or if being promoted from within - successful anytime one connects with human resources to see what is available.

If we see success as only 'when we arrive', we will miss the treasured - good and not so good - moments along the journey.  When I was in college I set many goals, yet I knew it was important to measure my seemingly little successes each day along the way.  Otherwise I would get discouraged thinking of all the years it would take me to finish.  Taking one step at a time and seeing each step as successful is crucial for completing any task or goal.  And, another thing to remember is that in our journey through life, we impact many other lives. This is a form of success that is often overlooked.

Take a moment today to appreciate the little successes you have had along the way and realize that you are successful already. Rethink and pursue some of the goals you may have thought were unattainable.  Take one day at a time...even one moment at a time and before you know it you will be at a new place.  And if you continually see yourself as successful, you will also notice all the treasures you have gained and given along the way.

Don't Sweat the Mistakes While Designing

January 10, 2012
"    When I taught in the local colleges, I always reminded the students to not get hung up on the mistakes they make while writing or designing something.  Make a correction if you must, but don't interfere with the brainstorming effect.  I have found that if I just continue moving forward with my ideas I end up creating even more than I dreamed possible.  You can always 'edit' written works later.  Sometimes those mistakes will be some of your greatest creations!"

Creativity in Art and Words

January 6, 2012

I once had an art teacher tell me;"When you're sitting with a blank sheet of paper in front of you...don't spend too much time thinking about what you are going to draw or create.  Just begin to write down words and more words...whatever comes to your mind - as it relates to the project you're working on."

I was amazed at how many related words I was able to write - soon I was beginning to illustrate pictures to fit the words.  Before I knew it, an idea had formed.  I have used this exercise when teaching others and it has helped many people.  I hope it helps you.

"Essays in school were my favorite test questions. Little did I know that one day I would be writing poems, self-help books and now a fantasy trilogy. Sometimes if we just take a quick look back in time, we'll find a lost or stolen dream that was so hidden, even we didn't see it."
